Team 1 Science Presentation At Assembly

This term the whole school has been focusing on Science as there is going to be a Dannevirke Science Fair at Dannevirke High School in Week 1 of Term 4.  Each class in Team One has been following The Scientific Method and some Team One children, along with Miss Hutchings's help, made a presentation for Assembly using Educreations on the ipads.  You can see this presentation below.

The Gingerbread Man

We have been studying The Gingerbread Man for the last three weeks of term.  We have ordered gingerbread men from the shortest to the tallest and have found things that are shorter, taller and about the                                                               same size as the gingerbread                                                             man.

To finish off our study of The Gingerbread Man, we made gingerbread men today. We followed the recipe.

Winter Warmer's Pizza Vouchers

The children that completed seven pages in their Winter Warmers book were given a child's pizza voucher with their book.  The Hell's Pizza truck is coming to Dannevirke on Tuesday the 29th of September and will be in front of the Sport's Club in High Street between 11.00 & 3.00.  This is an opportunity to redeem these vouchers.

Maths is Fun Holiday Fun

This is free and happening in the holidays.

It is to held at the Library in the second week of the holidays.  Year 1 & 2 have two half days - one on the Monday and the other on the Tuesday.  To register just go into the Library.

Day 17 of Our Science Project

Today was Day 17 of our bean experiment.  The seeds in the dirt/soil have grown the most, then the
seed raising mix.  The seeds in the wet cotton wool and the wet paper towels have also grown.

Discovery Day

Today we had Discovery Day.  Room 14 was closed and we had lots of outside games that we could choose to do.  We could choose anything to do in any room.

Then we went to the computer suite and did buddy writing about discovery day.  These are on the wall in our classroom.  Come and have a read.

Measuring Using Wool

Today we measured each other in pairs using wool.  We then cellotaped our wool  onto a piece of paper with our face and name on it.

When we hung all the bits of wool up, we found that we must have made some errors as the length of string didn't go from the shortest to the tallest like they should have as they were in the same order as in our photo of us lined up from the smallest to the biggest.

Today's Ipad Stories

We are learning to take a photo and write our story about it on Educreations.  Today we worked with a buddy and chose one of the three science investigations that we could photograph in our room.
Here are some of these:

Our Science Inquiry

Today we had another look at our bean plants and how they are doing. Today was Day 12 of our experiment.

The beans in the cotton wool, wet paper towels, sand, seed raising mix and the dirt have all grown.  The ones in the dirt have grown the most.

Maths and Measurement

We are learning to compare the length of two objects. .  First we worked with a buddy to make a train.  We talked about these using measurement vocabulary eg. longer/shorter. Then we had to make a train that was longer than Mrs. Bone's using only two rods.   We compared them by lining them up with each other.  Then we did some problem solving.  Kim had a train that had black, green and  blue rods. Jason had a train with yellow, black and green rods.  We had to decide who had the longest train.  The answer was Kim did.

Then we used the play dough to make worms.  First of all we looked for the longest worm and then for the shortest worm.

Eden and Fast Words

Eden has been practising her Fast words at home.  Today she showed Mrs. Bone 107 words that she had written at home.  She also had the biggest improvement in her Fast Words
score since last time.

Our Science Experiment

Today is day 8 of our experiment.  We read a book about What Scientists do and we have been observing and taking photos.  The dirt cup has the most growth but the sand and both the damp cotton wool cups also have some growth:

Printmaking

We are learning to use tools to make prints.  Today we made 3 types of prints.

1. Potato Prints:

2. Experimenting with the rollers:

3. Monoprints using printing ink and sheets of glass/plastic:

Odd Shoe Day

Sophie and Arianna organised an Odd Shoe Day today to raise money for Camp Quality.  We raised $279 in total

Mr. Murdoch from the paper came and took a photo with 2 people from each class.

After play we went to the computer suite and wrote stories with a buddy.  Here are some of these:

Today we had Odd Shoe Day and we have to raise money for kids with cancer. by Weramu & Devon

Today we had Odd Shoe Day.  All of the school had odd shoes on to raise money for the kids at Camp Quality. by Miley & Coen

Everyone was wearing cool odd shoes.  We were amazed.  We were wearing black shoes and Mya was wearing stripes on her shoe.  Ronya was wearing a star on her shoe.  We were raising money for people with cancer that go to Camp Quality.  by Mya & Ronya

We are having fun.  We have to wear odd shoes.  We felt happy shoes because we had to raise money for Camp Quality.  by Lochie & Eden

I am wearing slippers.  I like Odd Shoe day because people with cancer get money to buy toys.

Skip Counting In 10s

We are learning to skip count.  Today we skip counted in 10s using multilink cubes and the 100s board.  We also listened and watched some You Tube clips.

Then we used our handprints with ten fingers to skip count to 100 - we even went past 100!

Our Latest Science Experiment

Our experiment is to find out what the bean seeds will grow in.
We all made a hypothesis about which mediums we thought the beans would grow in.  We have two of each different medium.  The different mediums are:

  • damp cotton wool
  • lino
  • milk
  • orange fizzy
  • lemonade fizzy
  • water
  • dirt
  • sand
  • seed raising mix
  • wet paper towels

To get some more information we are also reading a big book called, Seeds Grow.

Today was Day 5 and when we looked closely we saw the bean seeds in the two dirt containers were both sprouting!

Skip Counting in 2s

Last week and this week in Maths we have been learning how to skip count in 2's.  Today we had a bag of socks that Mrs. Bone brought from home.  We found out that it was quicker to skip count in 2s rather than to count each one.

Feelings

This term one of our focuses in Story Writing is to use feelings to say how we felt about what happened.  As part of this, Mrs. Bone read us a story about a mouse and feelings,  Then we talked about lots of different feelings and took photos of some of these.  Can you guess who is: proud, ecstatic, excited, glad, scared, happy, proud, lonely and grumpy?

Winter Warmers Presentation

Nikki from the Tararua Library came to Team One today to present books to those children who completed 5 or more check-ins/activities.  For those people who completed 7 check - ins there was a pizza wheel that entitles them to a free children's pizza from Hell's Pizza.  The Hell's Pizza Caravan will be coming to Dannevirke next holidays also.

Deakan said thank you to Nikki on behalf of everyone in Team One.

Everyone who was in Room 2 last term got book which was fantastic.  Here we are holding our new books.  Aren't we lucky kids and it's all free too!
